How to Apply Clip-In Hair Extensions — Step by Step Guide

If you've never worn clip-in hair extensions before, the first application can feel daunting. Where do they go? How many sections? How do you stop them showing?

The good news: clip-in extensions are genuinely one of the easiest hair tools to learn. With a bit of practice, most people get the application down to under 5 minutes. This step-by-step guide walks you through exactly how to apply clip-in hair extensions for a natural, seamless result.

What You'll Need

  • Your clip-in extension set (5-piece or 9-piece)
  • A tail comb for sectioning
  • A brush or wide-tooth comb
  • Bobby pins (optional)
  • Mirror — ideally a handheld mirror so you can check the back

How to Apply Clip-In Hair Extensions — Step by Step

Step 1 — Prep your hair

Start with clean, dry, brushed hair. Lightly tease the roots at each section where you'll be placing clips — this creates texture for the clips to grip and helps keep the extensions secure. A light mist of dry shampoo or texturising spray also helps.

Step 2 — Create your first section

Using the tail of your comb, create a clean horizontal parting about 2–3 cm above your nape. Clip the top portion of your hair up out of the way. This bottom section is where your first (widest) weft will go.

Step 3 — Clip in your widest weft

Open all the clips on your widest weft (usually 4 clips). Centre it at the back of your head and snap the clips shut from the centre outward. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it's secure.

Step 4 — Work upwards section by section

Release a little more of your natural hair and create the next horizontal section 3–4 cm above the first. Place your next weft here. Continue working upward, placing smaller wefts through the mid-section and the narrowest wefts at the sides.

Step 5 — Release all your natural hair

Once all wefts are in place, release your natural hair over the top. The extensions should now be completely hidden under your natural hair.

Step 6 — Blend and style

Brush gently from ends to roots to blend your natural hair and extensions together. For the most seamless result, curl or wave both together — matching textures makes the blend invisible.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Placing wefts too high — keep all wefts at least 2–3 cm from your crown or hairline
  • Diagonal sections — always part horizontally so the weft lies flat and is fully covered
  • Not enough hair over the clips — ensure each weft is fully covered by the layer above it
  • Skipping the tease — on fine or silky hair, a little root teasing makes a big difference to grip

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to apply clip-in extensions?

For beginners, the first application usually takes 10–15 minutes. With practice, most people get it down to 5 minutes or less.

Can I apply clip-in extensions on my own?

Yes, absolutely. Clip-in extensions are specifically designed for self-application. The only challenging section is the back — a handheld mirror makes this much easier.

How do I know if my clips are secure?

After snapping each clip closed, give the weft a gentle tug. If it holds without moving, the clip is secure. If it slips, reposition slightly and try again on a fuller section of hair.
